6 Tips for Taming Oily Skin

Everyone wants a radiant healthy skin glow. What no one wants is skin that’s overly shiny and slick from being too oily. Every person has natural oils in their skin, but some are much more prone to excess oil production than others are. Most often it’s simply a matter of genetics, but certain other factors can also increase your skin’s tendency to produce oil. Hormonal changes, stress, weather, and certain skin products and cosmetics can cause your skin to become more oily.

If you struggle with oily skin, try these 6 tips for minimizing your oil problem:

  1. Always moisturize. It might seem counterintuitive to moisturize when you have oily skin, but oily skin can actually get dried out and dehydrated just like other skin types, especially during cold months. Choose a lightweight moisturizer that won’t clog your pores, such as Cures by Avance Pore Balancing Moisturizer.
  2. Keep your hair clean and off your face whenever possible. Having your hair in constant contact with your face can be detrimental for your oily skin—especially if it isn’t clean. Make sure you keep your hair clean, as sweat and dirt collected in your hair can easily work its way into your pores and add to your oil problem.
  3. Cleanse, but don’t overdo it. An important thing to remember about oily skin is that drying it out with excessive cleansing is counterproductive. Washing too often, especially with the strong chemicals found in oil-absorbing, acne-fighting cleansers, can strip away your skin’s healthy oils, leaving your skin dry.
  4. Try not to touch your face. Our hands come into contact with all types of germs throughout the day. Touching your face will transfer those germs over and make your skin more oily.
  5. Remove oil with blotting sheets or tissues. Instead of covering up with powder, which can make the problem worse by mixing with your skin’s oils, dab up oil with blotting sheets or tissues.
  6. Avoid oily makeups. Try a light powder-based makeup like Beauty ADDICTS Flawless Cover Pressed Powder, which offers a semi-matte finish without exposing your skin to excess oil.
